MGB3 Targets 10 Municipallities For its Geohazard Assesment and Mapping Program

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 3 is targeting 10 municipalities in Central Luzon for its 2010 Geohazard Assessment and Mapping Program .

According to Regional Director Danilo U. Uykieng, this activity is part of the major programs under the densification of geohazard and climate change maps which will be implemented this year by the MGB.

The densification project aimed to produce geohazard maps with scale of 1:10,000 covering critical areas to show more details of the area covered by the map. Director Uykieng said that 8 municipalities of Aurora, the municipality of Arayat in Pampanga and Botolan in Zambales will be prioritized in this project

Among the details that can be found in a 1:10,000-scale geohazard map include parameters or features in the area that may affect ground stability and the type of landslides that can possibly occur in the area.
The production of a 1:10,000-scale geohazard map is like zooming in the 1:50,000 map whereindetails of the area which cannot be represented in the 1:50,000-scale geohazard maps can be seen. With the production of 1:10,000 map, the identification of safe relocation sites can also be plotted.
The geohazard maps will be distributed to concerned local government units, with intensive information and education support and training of not only local officials but also local leaders and members of affected communities.
